Halloween Safety Tips

In an effort to make Halloween a fun and safe one for all, the Northfield Township Road District and the Cook County Sheriff asks parents to follow these safety recommendations.

  1. Children should be accompanied by a parent or other responsible adult.
  2. Children should be dressed in light colored costumes or have reflective strips sewn on the front and rear.
  3. Make sure costumes do not limit mobility and that approved paints for theatrical use are used for decorating faces instead of using masks. If a mask is worn, it should be constructed in a way which will not obstruct vision.
  4. All children should carry a lighted flashlight for added visibility.
  5. Always walk on the sidewalk and cross the street only at intersections.
  6. Bring all candy and treats home first to be carefully checked before eating any of them. All treats that are not wrapped should be discarded.

Residents are requested to indicate their willingness to welcome children by keeping their porch or exterior lights on and to only serve wrapped candy and treats.

If you are driving a motorized vehicle, please be especially observant on Halloween, and watch for all children who might not be aware of approaching vehicles.
